Eight far-flung barangays received satellite internet

The City Government of Davao, through the City Mayor’s Office, turned over satellite internet kits to eight barangays located in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs). This initiative forms part of the City Mayor’s thrust to ensure connectivity across all 182 barangays of Davao City.

These barangays are in areas that internet service providers are yet to reach.

“Ang goal man gud ni Mayor is dapat tanan mga barangay naa sila’y access sa internet, naa’y connectivity, at the same time maka-access ang mga barangay in the remote areas sa mga services sa city (It is the Mayor’s goal to ensure all barangays in the city has access to the internet—ensure connectivity so that they can easily access the services of the city government),” Nepthaly Talavera, Head of the City Information Technology Center (CITC), said during the turnover ceremony on April 8.

Harvey James Lanticse, Acting Head of the City Information Office (CIO), shared in an interview that Mayor Sebastian Duterte observed during his visits that several GIDA barangays had little to no internet access.

“Mayor Baste gave a directive to identify these barangays and procure high speed satellite internet for them to not only ensure connectivity but also ensure accessibility to government services and better communications,” he said.

At the core of this internet project is the goal of strengthening communication in geographically isolated barangays to ensure the efficient delivery of and access to government services, emergency and disaster communication, and education for learners in these communities.

Recipients of these satellite internet kits include Barangay Lamanan, Barangay Dalag, Barangay Gumitan, Barangay Magsaysay, Barangay Salaysay, Barangay New Valencia, Barangay Bayabas, and Barangay Eden.

Residents in the area expressed their gratitude to the city government for this welcome development as the satellite internet helps bridge communication and information gaps in their area.

“Dakong tabang ni siya sa katawhan para mapaabot namo sa gobyerno ang amoang mga mulo ug isa pud sa communication. Maayo ni siya nga project para sa amoa tungod kay beneficial siya sa amoang end (This is a big help to our community in communicating our concerns to the government. This project is really beneficial for us),” Julieto Sayad, Secretary and resident of Barangay Gumitan, said in an interview.

To further guarantee that all 182 barangays in the city have reliable internet access, on-the-ground canvassing and monitoring are also being conducted to identify other barangays with insufficient or lacking internet connections. CIO
