Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental town declare state of calamity

The entire province of Davao de Oro has been placed under a state of calamity after heavy flooding ravaged the area brought about by the Low Pressure Area affecting some parts in Mindanao.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan approved a resolution declaring the state of calamity  due to heavy damages in agricultural commodities such as rice, corn, high-value crops, fisheries, as well as irrigation facilities.

Based on the Rapid Damage Assessment And Needs Analysis (RDANA) conducted by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), a total of 4,645 families or 9,628 individuals in the towns of Monkayo, Nabunturan, Compostela, New Bataan, Mawab, and Montevista of said province have been affected by severe flash floods and landslides.

PDRRMC also recorded two casualties in Compostela town due to drowning. One reported injured and one still missing.

Meanwhile, the municipality of Cateel in Davao Oriental also declared the entire town under a state of calamity on Friday after it was severely affected by widespread flooding.

The Sangguniang Bayan of Cateel through the recommendation of the Municipal Risk Reduction and Management Council (MRRMC) approved Resolution No. 14-2022 on Friday, declaring the municipality under the state of calamity due to severe flooding brought about by the LPA causing extensive and heavy damage to agricultural crops, livestock, infrastructure, residential houses, other properties, and massive evacuation of affected families.

Under Republic Act 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991 and Republic Act 10121 known as the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 empower the Local Government Units to declare a state of calamity in any areas within its territorial jurisdiction in the event of, during and in the aftermath of manmade/ and or natural disasters through their respective Sangguniang Bayans.

The declaration aims to utilize the 5% calamity fund to extend relief assistance to affected families and to repair/rehabilitate damaged infrastructures.
