After the successful port visit of the Indonesian Coast Guard (BAKAMLA RI) last November 2023 in Davao, the PCG on its part will also undertake a port visit to Manado from 26 to 30 November 2024.
During the port visit, the PCG and BAKAMLA RI will undertake various activities such as people to people and expert exchange programs, cultural and sports activity, and working level meetings. A ship tour on board the PCG’s BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) will also be provided to the public including the Filipino citizens in Manado. A joint maritime exercise and coordinated patrols will conclude the visit.
In 2014, the Philippines and Indonesia signed a boundary delimitation agreement and the coordinated patrol that will be conducted will be the first activity between the two country’s coast guards after the signing of the Philippine Maritime Zones Act or Republic Act 12064 by President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr.
As the current Chairman of the ASEAN Coast Guard Forum (ACF), this significant port visit will also underscore the PCG’s commitment to advancing maritime safety, security, and prosperity in the region through strategic cooperation and collaboration.
While the ACF has not yet been formally established as an ASEAN sectoral body, it serves as an important platform for advancing regional maritime cooperation. Under the PCG’s leadership, the ACF aims to strengthen collaboration on key issues such as capacity building, information sharing, and addressing pressing maritime challenges like piracy, illegal fishing, and environmental protection.
As an active member of ACF, the PCG remains steadfast in its mission to foster unity, strengthen cooperation, and ensure safety, security, and prosperity in the ASEAN region.
Looking ahead, the PCG plans similar engagements with Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration and people-to-people exchange to address shared maritime concerns effectively.
