In a candid admission, Tulfo described the incident as one of the most embarrassing and humiliating experiences in his journalism career, stressing the importance of accuracy and responsible reporting.
“One of the most embarrassing and humiliating experiences as a journalist is to admit that nakuryente ako,” Tulfo said.
He explained that being “nakuryente” meant receiving false information, believing it to be true, and eventually passing it on to his readers.
The report contained specific allegations, including claims that Romualdez was transported in an ambulance and that brownouts were deliberately caused to conceal his alleged movements in and out of the detention facility.
However, after further information emerged on Wednesday, November 4, Tulfo acknowledged that the claims were unfounded.
“It was fiction. I goofed. No excuses,” he admitted.
Tulfo also recognized that he should have verified the information before sharing it with the public.
“I should have first checked and cross-checked that report I received on Romualdez,” he said.
