Speaking to reporters during Davao Peace and Security Press Corps briefing at The Royal Hotel on Wednesday, September 16, Fire Senior Inspector Frances Marie Sendrijas, spokesperson of the Davao City Fire District, said firefighters recorded 683 fire incidents during the eight-month period, compared with 462 cases recorded in the same period last year. Sendrijas said a significant number of the incidents involved grass fires, especially during periods of intense heat and minimal rainfall.
The fire district also recorded 41 casualties during the period, including 37 injured and four fatalities. One of the fatalities was a person with disability who died in a recent fire in Barangay Obrero.
Sendrijas urged residents to exercise greater caution when handling or disposing of combustible materials and to avoid activities that could ignite dry grass and vegetation.
