Veteran laden Davao Eagles chess team gets 1st win in PCAP tourney 2022

DAVAO CITY---The veteran-laden Davao City Eagles chess team won its opening game in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) tournament last January 22.

The Eagles beat fellow Minadanaoan team Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates 18-3.

With the win, the team gets 18 points and the top spot in the Southern division in the PCAP tournament made up of 24 teams.

The team dubbed Davao Chess Wizards joined the PCAP Premier Cup tournament last year as a guest team where they were able to reach the quarterfinals round.

This year, the team is focused and prepared to win the PCAP crown with a formidable line-up made up mostly of veteran chess players who carried the flag of the city in local, national, and international chess tournaments.

Leading the team is World chess champion for the differently-abled Sander Severino, veteran chess coach Roel Abelgas, former national chess youth champion National Master (NM) Jonathan Tan, DPWH engineer Aglipay Oberio, Panabo City, Davao del Norte NM Henry Lopez, Philippine chess team coach for the differently-abled James Infiesto, Allan Diez, Alexander Lupian, Arnel Iton, Anthony Mosqueda, Cris Yap, Atty. Jong Guevarra, Nap Recosoca, Mary Segara, and former DLSU college chess varsity member Joy Acedo.

With a veteran and strong roster, the Eagles are predicted to once again barge the PCAP playoffs this year and go for the crown if luck permits. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
