Davao City Gov’t shifts to electric fleet to boost sustainable, greener transit

The Davao City Government is taking a significant step toward a more sustainable transportation system with the initial procurement of electric vehicles (EVs) for its official fleet, signaling a move away from fuel-dependent models.

Harvey Lanticse, Acting Head of the City Information Office, said City Mayor Sebastian Duterte gave a directive in 2025 to begin planning the procurement of EVs for the local government unit’s fleet. Actual procurement activities started subsequently based on this directive.

“Even before the fuel crisis, in 2025, as part of his sustainability initiatives, Mayor Baste instructed the office to begin purchasing electric vehicles for the Davao City LGU vehicle fleet,” he said.

Currently, 54 EVs including multipurpose vehicles and disaster response vehicles are in the pipeline. The procurement process is underway, and the units are expected to arrive in batches starting this year.

“Moving forward, we will prioritize the acquisition of electric vehicles over diesel-powered ones,” Lanticse added.

The transition aligns with Section 6 of Republic Act No. 116987, or the Electric Vehicle Industry Act, which mandates that at least five percent of the vehicle fleet of government and private organizations consist of electric vehicles.

“We will continue to invest in a greener and more sustainable transportation system within the LGU to cushion the impact of high fuel prices,” Lanticse said.
