Over 20K families in Davao Region displaced by heavy rains; left 8 persons dead

DAVAO CITY- Continuous moderate to heavy rains caused by a shear line weather system triggered floods and landslides in different parts of Davao Region on Friday, Feb. 20, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 11 said in its update Saturday afternoon.

As of 2:30 p.m February 21, DSWD 11 reported that a total of 23, 994  families or 94, 155  individuals have been affected by the bad weather.

The shear line also  triggers fatal landslides in Davao de Oro towns   and Mati City in Davao Oriental leaving 8 dead - - 4 in Barangay Central, Mati City; 3 in Monkayo, Davao De Oro; and one in Barangay Napnapan in Pantukan, Davao de Oro.

The prolonged downpour caused rivers and creeks to swell, resulting in the inundation of low-lying  and flood-prone communities in the region.

DSWD 11 said open evacuation centers are currently accommodating  the displaced families. Concerned  Local Government Units, through their Disaster  Risk Reduction and Management  Offices are  conducting monitoring  and assessment with the local social welfare  and development office  present in evacuation centers to respond to the immediate needs of displaced families.

DSWD 11 provided a total of P824,600 worth of assistance consisting of food and non-food items.

Meanwhile, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (RDRRMC) 11 recorded a total of 47 barangays affected  by flooding and landslides incidents in 33 barangays mostly occurring along roadsides.

Two houses were recorded partially damaged.
