Wounded cops cited for bravery

DAVAO CITY- Two police officers who were injured while conducting a checkpoint at the regional boundary in Barangay Opon, Magsaysay, Davao Del Sur on Saturday early morning (December 28, 2024) were awarded the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (PNP Wounded Medal) for their exemplary bravery and dedication to duty.

The officers were manning a border control checkpoint at said place when they were shot by Police Corporal Alfred Dawatan Sabas.

Prior to the incident, Sabas, also shot dead a security guard passenger  inside a Mindanao Star Bus. 

These officers, despite  the injuries sustained,   have displayed remarkable courage in fulfilling their responsibilities, ensuring public safety, and aiding in the eventual arrest of the suspect.

The  Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting were given to the injured officers in recognition of their heroism under dangerous circumstances. 

The medals were presented to emphasize the PNP's commitment to honoring those who go above and beyond the call of duty.

The wounded PNP personnel also received  cash assistance of P150,000 each from the PNP headquarters and PRO 11.

PRO 11 director Brigadier General Victor Leon Rosete expressed his admiration for the officers. 

“Their bravery and unwavering dedication to duty, even in the face of great danger, deserve the highest recognition,” Rosete said. 

He said these officers served as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who wear the uniform to protect our communities.
