Duterte in a statement released Saturday night said the move, supposedly in connection with an investigation on a buy-bust operation, appears to be an abuse of power from higher authorities.
Out of the 35 relieved cops, which include city director Colonel Richard Bad-ang, 23 are police non-commissioned officers , while 11 others are station commanders and their deputies.
Duterte defended DCPO, who he said has consistently shown remarkable effectiveness in maintaining peace and order in the city.
"Our records indicate a significant 69% decrease in focus crimes comparing May Calendar year 2023 to May 2024," the statement said.
He said this accomplishment reflects the dedication and competence of our police force, working hand in hand with my administration.
Duterte further said," It's disheartening to witness such disruptive actions within our law enforcement agencies. The officers implicated, including esteemed city director Col. Bad-ang and the station commanders, have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their responsibilities."
He emphasized that there is substantial evidence supporting the assertion that the buy-bust operations were conducted within the bounds of the law saying, any insinuation of misconduct on their part is unfounded and unjust.
" It's important to note that according to Republic Act 6975, "City and Municipal mayors shall exercise operational supervision and control over the PNP units in their respective jurisdictions," he said.
"My active involvement emphasizes my dedication to collaborating with law enforcement to maintain peace and order in Davao City," explained Duterte.
He added the recent actions taken against the relieved personnel contradict the spirit of cooperation and mutual trust crucial for effective governance and law enforcement.
" I oppose any efforts to undermine the hard-earned trust between our community and law enforcement. These recent developments serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked authority," he said.
The young Duterte has called for transparency and accountability in handling this matter.
He also demanded for the immediate reinstatement of the unfairly relieved officers.
