Davao City Bypass Road project making significant progress

DAVAO CITY (PIA)- During the recently held Kasayuran sa PIA held in Barangay Mintal, Dean Ortiz, spokesperson of the Department of Public Works and Highways in Region XI said the Davao Bypass Road project is making significant progress.

The Davao City Bypass Road Road Project aims to connect Barangay Sirawan in Toril to Barangay J.P. Laurel in Panabo. It has a total length of 45.5 kilometers. The ongoing contract package 1-1 costs around P13. 23 billion.

According to Ortiz, the scheduled accomplishment is 29.22% but the actual accomplishment is 25.91%.

“As of March 28, 2023 sa northside naka drill na ta ug (we already drilled) almost 1, 013 meters or 1.01 kilometers, sa southside diri sa Matina Biao nakakalot na ta ug ( in the southside here in Matina Biao we dug) 931 meters,” Ortiz said.

“Sa total 4.6 kilometers because we will be digging two 2.3 kilometers we are almost at 50%,” the DPWH-XI spokesperson said of the current progress in the tunnel drilling.

The bypass road project features a twin tube road mountain tunnel in the road's central portion (10.7 kilometers). This is the first infrastructure project in the country to have a long-distance mountain tunnel.

Ortiz said the concentration of the work is at the 10.7-kilometer portion, including the tunnels with the carriageways and bridges still to be started.

“Having an accomplishment of 29.25 percent is significant enough,” Ortiz said.

When completed, Ortiz said those people coming from Mintal can pass through Panabo City without going towards the downtown area.

“If coming from the south you won’t be passing by the downtown area anymore,” Ortiz said of the convenience that will be experienced by motorists as they will not be enduring Davao City’s downtown traffic. (PIA/RG Alama)
