Injured Filipino trackster gets bronze in Kazakhstan

DAVAO CITY---Veteran Filipino trackster Janry Ubas placed third in the men's heptathlon at the 10th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan, late Sunday (Manila time), despite dealing with a bothersome injury.

Ubas broke the previous national record of 4565 points set by Jesson Ramil Cid at the 2014 competition in Hangzhou, China, by scoring 5246 points to win the bronze medal.

Yuma Maruyama of Japan won the competition with 5801 points, and fellow countryman Keisuke Okuda took home the silver with 5497.

Dario de Rosas, the head coach of the national team, disclosed that Ubas experienced piriformis syndrome while traveling to the Central Asian nation.

Long periods of sitting are one of the leading causes of piriformis syndrome, which happens when the piriformis muscle compresses your sciatic nerve and produces inflammation.

Before standing on the medal podium, Ubas broke the previous national record for men's long jump held by Donovant Arriola in 2015 with a leap of 7.66 meters.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
