Teen chesser carries Panabo City to 2nd place in recent major chess tournament

DAVAO CITY---A 13-year-old chesser carried Panabo City, Davao del Norte, to a second-place finish in the 2022 Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship Zamboanga City on May 21-22.

National Master Christian Gian Karlo Tade-Arca (Grade 7 student of Panabo City National High School), who plays for board one, led Panabo to the runner-up honor in the team chess tournament participated by some of the top chess teams in the Philippines.

In chess tournaments, one who plays on-board 1is considered the leader and strongest in the team.

The team, which was also composed of Chin Lim and ad Jayson Salubre won P30,000 cash prize. 

Arca also won a separate P1,000 for winning the most promising player award.

Last April 30 to May, the chess teams from Panabo City, Davao del Norte were the big winners in the Governor's Cup Chess Team Tournament held at Gaisano Mall of Tagum in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

Three teams from Panabo took the first three placers of the tournament participated in by some of the top chess teams in Mindanao.

Prince Knights Team from Panabo emerged as champion in the tournament.

The team led by Arca won P15,000 as a prize.

Arca's teamamate are Gerald Cañada Cavan and Alexander Clavite.

The second place went to Panabo's  JCAP Team, who won P10,000.

The team members are Jay Dela Victoria Bulicatin, Jerome Pullos (Grade 10 student of Panabo City NHS), and Dooders Soliven Bacolod.

The third place went to Panabo's Shohuko Team, who won P 5,000.

The chess tournament was earlier organized by the provincial government of Davao del Norte. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
