In a report from the City Information Office (CIO), VRU head retired Colonel Hernando Las said about 2,020 apprehensions have been recorded in four months from January 2022 to April this year.
Las said that the number of public smoking incidents remained significant despite the City’s rigorous anti-smoking campaigns.
Ordinance No. 0367-12 or the Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance of Davao City prohibits smoking in public places, government-owned vehicles, accommodation and entertainment establishments -such as bars and hotels.
It also prohibits smoking in workplaces, enclosed or partially enclosed public places, and public buildings.
The VRU, meanwhile, announced its program of activities for this year’s celebration of World No Tobacco Day on May 31.
Las said they will be offering free services during the anti-smoking event.
The celebration according to him, will begin on May 27 with the holding of a tobacco and health awareness seminar in coordination with the non-government organizations (NGO), HealthJustice Philippines and a motorcade on May 31 as well.
VRU will also recognize all police stations for their continued enforcement of the city’s anti-smoking ordinances.
City Health Office (CHO), likewise will be offering free pre-consultation on Nicotine Replacement Therapy for those heavy smokers who wish to quit.
The schedule is from Mondays to Fridays, between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Department of Health (DOH) record revealed, tobacco smoking kills 87, 000 Filipinos each year.
