The victim was identified as Warlito Saclanas, 50 years old.
In its report on Saturday, Mati City Information Office said that Saclanas was fishing 98 nautical miles at the water off Davao Gulf around 3:38 a.m when he was wounded by the bill (spear-like snout) of a blue marlin.
He suffered a puncture wound and was rushed by the members of the Philippine Coastguard and Mati City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to the Davao Oriental Provincial Medical Center where he is now being treated.
Marlins are recognisable by their spear-like snouts.
