12 BIFF members yield in Maguindanao

DAVAO CITY- Twelve members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) including a sub-leader and his deputy surrendered in Maguindanao on March 30.

Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) spokesman Major Andrew Linao identified the BIFF- Karialan Faction sub-leader as Anwar Pegas, and his deputy Zukarno Sailila.

Ten other members also voluntarily surrendered to Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Alburo, Commanding Officer of the 40th Infantry Battalion.

Linao said the former violent extremists also handed over their firearms including two 7.62mm M14 rifles, two 5.56mm M16A1, Carbine , two caliber 50 Barret Sniper rifles, two 9mm submachine guns, 40mm Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher, two M79 Grenade Launchers, and 40mm high explosive RPG ammunition.

Colonel Oriel Pangcog, commander of 601st Infantry Brigade said the surrender is a result of the joint efforts of the military, police, and the local government of Ampatuan, Maguindanao.

Linao said the surrenderers revealed to them that they were experiencing hardships and starvation while evading the operations conducted by the armed forces.

The former BIFF members also realized that they were lured with false ideologies that affected themselves and their fellow Filipinos leading to their withdrawal of support to the group, according to Linao.

Major General Juvymax Uy, Joint Task Force Central commander said the influx of surrenders manifests the continuous dwindling of the terrorist groups in Central Mindanao.

“We are optimistic that these groups, including the BIFF-Karialan Faction, are nearing its end,” he said.

JTF Central has reported that 97 BIFF members surrendered in their area of operation since January of this year, and 90 guns recovered.

WestMinCom chief Lieutenant General Alfredo Rosario said they continue to gain ground and this is attributable to the concerted efforts of the military troops, partners, and stakeholders.

“I, personally, would like to urge those who are still hiding to cross the line. We are more than willing to welcome and assist you in your reintegration into mainstream society,” Rosario said.
