Davao City still avian flu-free

Davao City remains free from avian influenza (avian flu) or bird flu, the head of the City Veterinarian’s Office (CVO) announced Thursday, (March 31).

The confirmation has been made following initial monitoring and the samples taken from some poultry farms where the results are negative.

In its report, the City Information Office (CIO) said the CVO has focused its surveillance in Talomo and Tugbok areas where tcommercial poultry farms are mostly located.

Dr. Cerelyn Pinili, the Head of the CVO, said  poultry from avian flu hit areas in Luzon are banned from entering Mindanao.

Strict measures are now in place for the entry of poultry products from Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat, which is the nearest avian flu hit area in the city, she said.

Pinili further added that more checkpoints have been established at entry points from North Cotabato to Davao City and Buda and Marilog areas, including in Arakan - Dalaglumot, Marilog boundary.

“There are other areas connecting North Cotabato and Marilog so we placed a checkpoint between Arakan and Dalaglumot, Marilog, also in the Arakan boundary and Magsaysay, Marilog,” she said.

These are additional checkpoints, which she said are purposely put in place to monitor the entry of live birds in the city and check if there are complete documentary requirements.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) earlier issued a Memorandum Circular to ban the entry of poultry from avian flu affected areas in Luzon to Mindanao for 30 days.

She however said, that the entry of poultry from regions free from avian flu is allowed provided that the documentary requirements are complied.

Pinili also assured that there is no avian flu transmission to human case recorded in the city including in avian flu hit areas.

“For now it is only bird to bird, poultry to poultry. We are in stage two, so the infection is a bird to bird. We have not recorded from bird to human transmission,” Pinili said.

She also said that avian flu can affect not only commercial poultry but also fowl such as game fowls, broilers, pigeons, quails, turkey, ducks, and migratory birds.

CVO assures continuous monitoring of migratory birds even with no reported bird migration in the city as a precautionary measure amid the avian flu outbreak in other areas.

Migratory birds can be found in Davao del Norte particularly in Carmen town.
