3 unvaccinated seniors die of COVID-19

The Davao City COVID-19 Task Force reported Monday (March 28) that three unvaccinated senior citizens in the city died of the disease recently.

Dr. Michelle Schlosser, the spokesperson of the city’s COVID-19 Task Force, said the recent deaths so far were unvaccinated seniors.

Schlosser told the City Information Office (CIO) that the COVID-19 casualties were severe to critical cases and required hospital care.

"We have three deaths overall. All of them were unvaccinated,” she said.

Schlosser bared the importance of having vaccinated against COVID-19, especially for the 60 years old and above age group.

A two-dose vaccination with a booster of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine, according to her, would boost a person's immunity against the virus.

This would also provide protection against the severity of the disease, thus, reducing the risk of getting severe to critical symptoms that may lead to death.

She said fully vaccinated individuals and those who received booster doses only manifest mild or no symptoms at all when they contract COVID-19.

Schlosser, meanwhile, said that from the 1.8 percent recorded in the past, the COVID-19 positivity rate in the city slightly increased to two percent by March 25.

"We have 12 active cases today with a two percent positivity rate, still very low compared to our previous five percent positivity rate,” she said.

She further said that the sense of responsibility and discipline of Dabawenyos, along with protection from the vaccine and booster doses, will add a layer of protection against infection or the severe symptoms of the disease.

Schlosser reiterates calls to Dabawenyos to follow the minimum health protocols such as the wearing of face masks and frequent handwashing to help contain the COVID-19 transmission amid the more relaxed Alert Level 1 status of the city.
