NM from Malita gets quarterfinals slot in the 2022 online speed chess championship

DAVAO CITY---A veteran chesser who traces his roots in Malita, Davao Occidental won a slot in the quarterfinals of the 2022 United Queens Chess Club Speed Chess Championship (2nd Qualifying tournament.

Elwin Herbias Retanal got the slot after he emerged as champion in the qualifying tournament participated in by some of the top chess players in the Philippines held last March 16.

Retanal will compete against other qualifiers in the quarterfinals on March 22.

Last November 12, Retanal also won the tough Riyadh Chess League Open Tournament for the second time at the Lulu Hypermarket Murabba, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Retanal won the crown after scoring 6.5 points in the chessfest participated in by some of the top chessers in the Middle East.

Retanal, a captain waiter at King Salman Royal Palace, stayed unbeaten in the seven-round Swiss System.

The 42-year-old NM received cash and a trophy as prizes.

Last September 25 - October 2, 2021, Retanal also won the same tournament.

Retanal also won the crown by scoring 6.5 points in the chessfest participated in by some of the top chessers in the Middle East.

In a Facebook post, Retanal expressed great joy over his win.
